VMware Movember Wrap Up

Since 2003, the Movember Foundation has raised $911 million to fund more than 1,200 programs focused on prostate and testicular cancer, mental health issues, and physical inactivity. The global charity is dedicated to resolving what it considers an international crisis: on average men around the world are dying six years earlier than women for a variety of reasons.

The three main reasons for supporting Movember were stipulated as below:
  1. You or someone you know could directly benefit from the organization’s mission.
  2. Screening and treating men’s health issues can (and should) be better than it is.
  3. Men just don’t get noticed enough for health stuff.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, 61% of men have neglected visiting a doctor even when they needed to go. Whether it’s due to cultural beliefs and stereotypes around masculinity and machismo or the fear of invasive physical exams, guys just don’t like to get seen or even talk about health issues. Movember gets men and women talking about the importance of these issues and how they can support one another in staying healthy, and on behalf of the team at VMware, we are so thrilled with the outcome!

This year, VMware participated in an ambitious and invaluable fundraiser that is Movember. Instead of the tedious but fun things that we brainstormed — a bake sale, a raffle, a night at Beefcakes, a bingo night, and a series of giveaways for people who participate — we decided on Movember with the goal to raise as much moola as possible by means of mo.

While I wouldn’t go as far as to say that men’s health necessarily gets overlooked, I do think it’s not as prevalent in the world in terms of conversations being started and fundraising done for those in need. Read on for a report back on the fantastic work that our Movember participants did on our Mo’s and fundraising.

Priyesh Parbhoo raised R1800. Ian Jansen Van Rensburg raised R650. Gareth James raised R200. Fernando Frias raised R900. Duane Pollett raised R700. Last but not least, Andrew Bennett took the cake with a remarkable R5000.

Well done to you all and thank you for taking part in this initiative along with VMware – we salute you!
