In our first ever Unthink community hangout, Alex Matthews, EMEA Technical Solution Architect Manager, Strategic Alliances at VMware hosted an insightful discussion on digital transformation and cloud adoption. Joining him was Ashish Saxena, Leader and Head of Digital Transformation/Analytics at Cognizant Technology Solutions; Guy Ratcliffe, Head of Offerings Fujitsu EMEIA and Paul McSharry, Independent VMware consultant.
We thought it would be useful to give you a break down of the key topics which were discussed below.
Digital Transformation
Is no longer seen as just a buzzword, but a necessity that is at the core of business strategy today, the session opened with thoughts on digital transformation and how we get there. The consensus was that without access to the right applications, in the most convenient way possible; ensuring security is maintained, no journey can begin.
Ashish pointed to cloud adoption as being the single most important factor to kick-starting transformation. Guy had similar views, “Digital transformation is about leveraging assets you have, as well as the structures that you can use, such as the cloud to build capabilities to drive business.”
What’s The Golden Rule?
What’s the golden rule for those customers who have been able to transform? Is there a best practice approach to applying technology, people and process to transform?
“It depends on the maturity of the customer and what transformation means to them” explained Guy. Business processes, people and organisation set ups differ, so it’s important to consider these factors when choosing the applications to drive your company’s transformation.
Cloud security standards
While there’s the temptation to get as many security accreditations as possible for a cloud service, the panel also highlighted the importance of customers doing their own due diligence to maintain secure environments. Guy advised to always start by finding out what service providers can provide to match to your requirements.
On the importance of collaboration, Paul said that in the early stage of the transformation, managing security “should be a partnership between the cloud provider and the customer, working together to fight key threats and align on a shared approach.”
The consensus is clear
What emerged throughout the session is the belief that organisations who want to drive business value need to move towards a hybrid or multi-cloud model to facilitate transformation.
When looking at the role of the partner, Alex concluded, “The experienced partner community is there to help customers make use of existing technology, but also to enable customers to adopt new technology for digital transformation.
