Rome has some of Europe’s most congested roads, and frustrated commuters. By deploying VMware Horizon® 7, Città metropolitana di Roma Capitale is helping to empower remote working for public sector employees.
More people travel by car or scooter in Rome than in any other major European city, according to 2018’s Greenpeace report. It means Rome’s roads are congested, dirty and dangerous – and traffic adds an extra 40 percent to Romans’ travel times.
Greenpeace says the city is over World Health Organization guidelines for safe levels of air pollution and risks serious damage to its inhabitants’ health and its historic buildings.
There is no one solution to this, but, clearly, something must be done.
One idea is to reduce the number of commuters making daily journeys, and the simplest way to do this is to encourage more people to work from home. Private enterprise is already working on this, but it is Italy’s public sector employers that can perhaps make the biggest impact.
Italy has lagged behind other European economies in the digital transformation of its public sector. With tight public finances, and citizens comfortable conducting non-state business online or on mobiles, it realizes it has some ground to make up.
Secure, simple remote working
Città metropolitana di Roma Capitale oversees the running of a wide territory, from schools to transport, libraries to parks. It manages a vast area, with 121 local municipalities and 4.5 million citizens.
It is using VMware Horizon 7 to provide end-users with access to their virtual desktops, applications, and online services through a single digital workspace. It enables Roma’s IT team to provision virtual or remote desktops and applications through a single VDI and application virtualization platform. This helps streamline the management of the project and allows Città metropolitana di Roma Capitale to add users easily.
The city is taking a phased approach. It is starting with 200 specially selected users, representing a range of departments and job functions. It plans to roll-out to 1,200 users (around 80 percent of all staff) within a year.
The solution enables Città metropolitana di Roma Capitale to dynamically allocate resources with virtual storage, virtual compute and virtual networking. This promises to simplify management and drive down costs.
Rather than losing control, the solution strengthens the city’s position. Horizon 7 consolidates control, delivery and protection of end-user compute resources with policies that dynamically adapt to the end-user’s computing environment. It means Città metropolitana di Roma Capitale can leverage virtual networking to simply and dynamically protect data center infrastructure and workloads.
The result is fewer people need to make a frustrating commute, and Rome’s roads are a tiny bit clearer.
