What exactly is this ‘Movember’ thing where you see a whole lot of people out and about sporting a stache resembling something between Hitler and a paedo? Surely there must be a point to this, and perhaps even a consensus, proving this to be something other than a wild coincidence?
Movember is an initiative with the aim of saving and improving men’s lives through a range of projects focused on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. It is estimated that globally, men die on average 6 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.
Our fathers, brothers, sons and friends are dying by suicide, every minute of every day, with many not knowing how to speak out and get help due to stigmas, symptoms being challenging to recognise in some cases, and many seeing their symptoms as a weakness instead of a treatable illness. The World Health Organisation has stated that they estimate the global suicide rate to be close to 800 000 people dying due to suicide annually, which is one person every 40 seconds.
The scale of this problem is far larger than many of us realise, and at VMWare, we have decided to get involved and support this initiative in the hopes of not only getting our staff involved, but create a ripple effect in the lives of those around them.
Movember is here to spread awareness and let prevention be the order of the day in an instance where the cure is sometimes too little, too late. Movember focuses on early intervention, engaging men and working to their strengths. By 2030, they aim to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25%.
Men with prostate cancer and testicular cancer face an uphill battle before, during and after treatment. Along with the aid of useful tools and straight-shooting advice on how to cope, the initiative aims to lighten peoples load so that our loved ones and the men in our lives can live life to the fullest. A crisis this size calls for big ideas from the brightest minds. Movember brings together researchers and experts from all over the world, reducing research overlap to maximise brainpower and also accelerate progress.
The VMWare team in the Netherlands has recently started working with the Cancer Institute, knowing that a cure to cancer won’t be discovered in one fell swoop. It will be the result of a long chain of small discoveries that entails progress in the IT industry — so small, they may be easy to miss.
